Acer Swift 7 Preview

Acer Swift 7 Preview: It seems only natural that almost every laptop manufacturer now offers pretty thin, sleek, aluminum models in their lineup. A few years back it was entirely different. Eventually, it was Intel with the introduction of the ‘ultrabook’ concept that pushed manufacturers to raise the bar higher. When we look at models like the Asus Zenbook and Acer Aspire S7 for the first time, we could not imagine that laptops were ever going to be thinner and lighter. We were completely wrong.

This year seems to follow the same trend. Manufacturers try to outdo with laptops that are thinner and lighter, which hitherto, the usual elements such as regular USB ports and video outputs have had to be left out. Everything is being done to get laptops as thin as possible. Apple has, in this class, the 12″ MacBook, HP recently came with the Spectre 13, Asus has the Zenbook 3 and now at IFA Acer has joined the club with the Acer Swift 7, a laptop less than a centimeter thick, only slightly weighs more than a kilogram.

The Swift 7 is part of a whole new series of Acer notebooks which will also come from Swift 1-, 3- and five models, but we focused on the flagship.

We compared the specs of the main competitors, and it is immediately apparent that Acer may indeed claim the title of the thinnest laptop, although the difference for example with the HP Spectre 13 is perhaps negligible.

Along the laptop’s right edge there are three connectors: two USB Type-C 3.1 ports (one for charging and one for data) and a 3.5mm audio jack. It’s nice to see more than one USB Type-C connector, although it’s one fewer than the HP Spectre 13.

Keyboard & TouchPad

The Swift 7 feels solid and polished. As usual with a laptop in this class, the keyboard isn’t necessarily a strong point, but we found that the keys still feel finer than the keys on a MacBook.

Also, the touchpad, which is beautiful and spacious, responds well. The duotone color with champagne and black looks nice, though we hope that there is also a more classic version that comes with a gray color.

Screen & Display

The 13.3 “screen on the Swift 7 has a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, and although there are plenty of laptops with higher resolutions, we can understand Acer’s choice. With so little space to fill inside the chassis, the battery will not be enormous, and a full-hD screen would increase the power consumption. The glossy finish of the display makes colors look beautiful, but it also brings additional reflections with it. The display features Corning Gorilla Glass for protection.

The screen is a 13.3-inch, Full HD IPS panel. It’s bright with punchy colors and high contrast, although it somewhat fails to stand out against the bezel that surrounds it.

Specs

The Acer Swift 7 runs the Intel CPUs from the Kaby Lake-generation, up to 8GB RAM, an SSD of up to 256GB, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi AC support for multi-user MIMO. Furthermore, users will eventually be able to buy a model equipped with a fingerprint scanner. It can be used with Windows Hello on Windows 10 devices to log on to the notebook, but also, for example, to log on to websites.

Video: Acer’s Swift 7 is the thinnest laptop ever

At IFA 2016, Acer introduced the Swift 7, its slimmest laptop to date and the lankest we’ve ever seen. Measuring just 9.98mm in thickness, this Windows 10 PC still has two USB-C ports and a headphone jack, and its maker promises a full 9 hours of battery life.

Conclusion

So, at first glance, the Acer Swift 7 is an excellent laptop on the market for people who highly value thickness and weight. The Swift 7 equips all the hardware you might expect, and fortunately, more than one USB C port.

Of the Spectre 13, one of its competitors, we know it is not easy to provide such a thin notebook of reliable and mostly quiet cooling. Also, once we get a hold of the Acer Swift 7, We’ll provide a full Acer Swift 7 Review.
