Google Calendar Will No Longer Send SMS Notifications Starting January 7th 2019

Google plans to stop sending SMS notifications set up for alerts from Google Calendar starting January 7th, 2019. Users will instead have to rely on in-app notifications.

Google took to their official blog today to announce the change. Users who already set up SMS notification will be informed of the upcoming change in one of two ways:

If you had previously been receiving Calendar notifications via SMS, they’ll be replaced with in-app and email notifications. You’ll see these notifications:

  • As event notifications in a web browser that has Calendar open or a mobile device if you have the Google Calendar app for Android or iOS.
  • In an email: if you had set up SMS notifications for new events, changed events, canceled events, or event responses.

It gives users time to update their settings to enable Google Calendar notifications (if you had previously disabled them):

  • Go to Settings > Apps & notifications.
  • Look for the Calendar app.
  • Turn notifications on.
